On October 15, 1881, Denny McKnight held a meeting at Pittsburgh's St. The team joined the minor league International Association in 1877, only to fold the following season. Professional baseball in the Pittsburgh area began in 1876 with the organization of the Allegheny Base Ball Club, an independent (non-league) club based in a then-separate city called Allegheny City, across the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh. Frank Chance of Chicago and John McGraw of New York, two teams the Pirates beat for the pennant, are being made to Walk the plank. The 1909 Pirates in a poster celebrating their National League pennant. These colors are derived from the flag of Pittsburgh, and Pittsburgh is the only North American city where all the professional sports teams share the same colors. Since 1948 the Pirates' colors have been black, gold and white, matching the other major professional sports teams in Pittsburgh, the Steelers and the Penguins (and the minor league Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC). The Pirates previously played at Forbes Field from 1909 to 1970 and at Three Rivers Stadium from 1970 to 2000. Since 2001 the team has played its home games at PNC Park, a 39,000-seat stadium along the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh's North Side. The Pirates are also often referred to as the "Bucs" or the "Buccos" (derived from buccaneer, a synonym for pirate). The Pirates currently have the sixth-longest World Series championship drought (behind the Cleveland Guardians, Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners-all of which except the Guardians have never won a World Series), second-longest World Series appearance drought in Major League Baseball (behind only the Mariners, who have never appeared in a World Series), the longest pennant drought in the National League, the longest League Championship Series appearance drought in either league and are tied for the longest MLB division championship drought with the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins (both of whom joined as expansion teams the season after the Pirates' most recent division title). Lately the Pirates have been known for their futility they had 20 consecutive losing seasons from 1993 to 2012-the longest such streak in American professional sports history -and have qualified for the postseason just three times since 1992. They won again in 1971 behind Roberto Clemente, the first Latin-American enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 1979 under the leadership of Willie Stargell. The Pirates took part in arguably the most famous World Series ending, winning the 1960 World Series against the New York Yankees on a walk-off home run by Bill Mazeroski, the only time that Game 7 of the World Series has ever ended with a home run. The Pirates were among the best teams in baseball at the start of the 20th Century, playing in the inaugural World Series in 1903 and winning their first title in 1909 behind Honus Wagner. The Pirates have won five World Series championships, nine National League pennants, nine National League East division titles and made three appearances in the Wild Card Game. Founded as part of the American Association in 1881 under the name Pittsburgh Alleghenys, the club joined the National League in 1887 and was a member of the National League East from 1969 through 1993. The Pirates compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The Pittsburgh Pirates are an American professional baseball team based in Pittsburgh.

Hitchcock's visual style meanwhile isn't as overwhelming here as it is in later works, but there are reliable bursts of flashiness and no shortage of beautiful compositions. You can always tell what the former is thinking, and it's impossible to fully understand the latter, as his movie star charm contradicts the implied desperation of the conflict. Fontaine shines brightly (delivering the only Oscar-winning performance in a Hitchcock film), while she and Grant each add layers of complexity to their characters. One of Hitchcock's many paranoid thrillers, Suspicion examines the struggle of a woman ( Joan Fontaine) who suspects her husband (Cary Grant) of horrific crimes. Though, the fact that Hitchcock considered Shadow of a Doubt to be his favorite of his many films counts for something, landing this entry in the top 30, respectively, though not enough to crack the top 25. Instead, Hitchcock frames him as a slimy monster nearly every second he's on screen, so there's very little room for ambiguity. The film wants to operate in shades of gray, but its second lead seems transparently evil in every one of his scenes, including the ones where he's supposed to be playful and charming with his younger relatives.Ī more thoughtful, intriguingly tense movie would make Cotten's character genuinely likable and charismatic when he's not showing his villainous hand to complicate our feelings toward him, in the same way that the attitude of the protagonist ( Teresa Wright) is supposedly complicated. It's an uncomfortable sequence that's as poorly constructed as it is offensive, and it completely knocks the wind out of an otherwise enjoyable film.īuilt around an excellent premise - suspecting your favorite family member of unspeakable crimes - Shadow of a Doubt stumbles on the path to reaching its full potential due to spotty pacing and a subpar performance from Joseph Cotten. It's all fun and games until the finale, which hinges on one of the worst scenes of Hitchcock's career: We, the audience, identify a suspect as the camera slowly zooms in on him while he plays the drums in blackface. The pair reluctantly goes on the run from De Marney's murder charge together, but as they come across the family and friends of Pilbeam's character, the duo plays it as if they're lovers trying to balance their personal happiness with her loved ones' expectations. Despite being relatively underwritten, their romantic dynamic crackles as the two easily find the comedy in every scenario without undermining the dramatic tension. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story. One of Hitchcock's lighter thrillers, Young and Innocent is a straightforward wrong-man film elevated by the chemistry of its leads, Derrick De Marney as fugitive and Nova Pilbeam as a young woman roped into his antics. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!" The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. We are now having a very innocent little chat. “There is a distinct difference between "suspense" and "surprise," and yet many pictures continually confuse the two. For his very tall NBA teammates, there are 12 feet long sofas, to comfortably stretch out on and a custom poker table with plenty of leg space. Hence, air control includes the control of windwashing (cold air passing through insulation) and convective loops which are air movements within a wall or ceiling that may result in 10% to 20% of the heat loss alone. Control of air movement includes flow through the enclosure (the assembly of materials that perform this function is termed the air barrier system) or through components of the building envelope (interstitial) itself, as well as into and out of the interior space, (which can affect building insulation performance greatly). Basement waterproofing and drainage keep the walls dry and a moisture barrier is needed under the floor.Ĭontrol of airflow is important to ensure indoor air quality, control energy consumption, avoid condensation (and thus help ensure durability), and to provide comfort. Moisture can enter basements through the walls or floor. Generally most materials will not remain sealed over the long term and this system is very limited, but ordinary residential construction often treats walls as sealed-surface systems relying on the siding and an underlayment layer sometimes called housewrap. Sealed-surface walls do not allow any water penetration at the exterior surface of the siding material. Drainage walls may also be ventilated to aid drying such as rainscreen and pressure equalization wall systems. Drainage walls allow water that leaks into the wall to drain out such as cavity walls. Barrier walls are designed to allow water to be absorbed but not penetrate the wall, and include concrete and some masonry walls. Types of wall systems with regard to water penetration are barrier, drainage and surface-sealed walls. Walls do not get as severe water exposure as roofs but still leak water. Domestic roof construction may also be ventilated to help remove moisture from leakage and condensation. Typically residential, pitched roofs are covered with an underlayment material beneath the roof covering material as a second line of defense. Pitched roofs are designed to shed water but not resist standing water intrusion which can occur during wind-driven rain or ice damming. Flat roofs actually slope up to 10° or 15° but are built to resist intrusion from standing water. Two broad categories of roofs are flat and pitched. One of the main purposes of a roof is to resist water. Water and water vapor control Ĭontrol of rain is most fundamental, and there are numerous strategies to this end, namely, perfect barriers, drained screens, and mass / storage systems. The control function is at the core of good performance, and in practice focuses, in order of importance, on rain control, air control, heat control, and vapor control. Finish (to meet desired aesthetics on the inside and outside).Control (the flow of matter and energy of all types).

Check closely for the type and number of batteries you need, and whether a starter set is included. We haven’t included ergonomic models in this round of reviews.īattery needs: All wireless keyboards use batteries. Look for models with adjustable legs or feet. Most mainstream keyboards use membrane technology, which is adequate for most users, but heavy-duty users and gamers will likely prefer keyboards with mechanical switches (which are not reviewed here). Windows hotkeys, or even programmable keys, are great bonuses, especially for power users.Īdjustability: Some keyboards offer no adjustment for angle or height. flatter key designs, and it’s surprising how little things like the texture or the amount of dimple will make or break a choice. This is why we encourage trying before buying: We’ve had very different experiences with traditional keys vs. Keys: Look for keys that are sculpted and spaced for typing comfort. These will sacrifice some features but be easier to take with you. As more of us carry laptops or tablets, however, we’ll look for models that are compact or portable. Size: A model that will always sit on your desktop can be bigger and heavier, and usually some other advantages some with that. You’re going to use this keyboard every day, so make sure it fits your typing habits and your needs. For instance, we balance the versatility of multi-platform models like Logitech’s K780 against its performance as an actual keyboard you need to use everyday (and in this case, it wins on all counts). We considered the size, weight, and durability of each model against its purpose-whether it was designed to be portable or desk-bound, and compact or fully featured. We also tried the secondary features: hotkeys, switches and dials on multi-platform models, and even the ability to adjust the angle or other comfort characteristics. We assessed the primary typing experience: key design, typing feel, and even noisiness. We spent at least one full workday typing exclusively on each model we tested, with follow-up time to allow for a learning curve. It was hands-on all the way with our keyboard testing. Logitech Ergo K860 review How we test wireless keyboards It’s a little expensive compared to a conventional wireless keyboard, but if you’re struggling with comfort, the K860 is the only ergonomic keyboard we’d heartily recommend. In the course of our review, there was a marked improvement in typing comfort and reduced muscle tension, all without sacrificing productivity to a steep learning curve. Logitech’s Ergo K860 has finally conquered our skepticism about awkward ergonomic keyboards.
